Make the Best Homemade Cafe Latte’ & here is how..

Prep Time – 5 minutes

Latte was traditionally known as a Café Latte in Italy.  The Caffe’ Latte name was shortened to simply “Latte” in America.  The Latte is a coffee beverage of Italian origin made with espresso and steamed milk.  There are many variants which include chocolate flavored mocha or replacing the coffee with another beverage base such as chai, or matcha.

Often alternatives to milk are often used such as soy milk, oat or almond milk, are also used.  The term Latte comes from the Italian caffellatte, from café e latte, literally “coffee and milk.”  Still today if you order a Latte in Europe or Italy you will often get a small cup of steamed milk.

A latte is a single or double shot of espresso and steamed milk (typically 1/3 espresso and 2/3 steamed milk).  It also has a layer of foam on top where you will often find latte art.

Lattes are highly customizable. You can create an iced or hot coffee or add a variety of types of flavors to your Café latte.

One thing to remember – is that Lattes can quickly become very unhealthy very quickly with added sweeteners and syrups.  To keep this drink on the healthier side try using non-fat milk and limiting the amount of added sweeteners and syrups you use.  You can also get creative by making your own natural syrups so that you can control sugar content.

Ingredients:

½ cup whole milk

(to make a Skinny Latte substitute the whole milk for skim milk or a milk substitute).

1 cup dark roast espresso coffee

(freshly brewed is best).

Directions:

Pour the milk into a milk frother and begin to froth the milk.

If you do not have a milk frother, add the milk to a glass jar with a lid and shake vigorously for 30-45 seconds, until the milk doubles in size.

Or you can vigorously whisk the milk by hand. This is okay if you have extra time and energy.  I personally prefer the milk frother or the jar method.  Regardless, have fun and put love into making the perfect latte at home.

Remove the lid from the jar and place the jar in the microwave.  Microwave for 30-40 seconds, until the milk is hot, make sure that the jar is not too hot to pick up.

Pour the coffee into two large coffee mugs or latte cups and slowly pour the milk into the coffee.  Top with any extra foam from the steamed milk.

Design:

There are so many AMAZING designs to learn.  A few favorites are the tulip and the heart.  My favorite is the heart so this is something to practice and have fun with while making your favorite lattes at home.  Send a picture of your beautiful latte creations.  Have fun and I hope that you enjoy!
